Collagen Cream - Miracle or Over-Hyped Mess?
When the first collagen cream became available to the general public back in the 1990's - it was quickly touted as the best way to ensure that skin stayed young, fresh, and vibrant. Many hundreds of thousands of people rushed out to the local store to buy collagen cream, and for a while, there was a worldwide shortage of the product.
We've learned a lot since those times, and this is probably an ideal opportunity to look back and see whether there was a genuine need to rush out any buy all of those products as we did all those years ago, or whether we simply fell for a good old marketing ploy.
Collagen Is The Essence Of Skin
You've probably heard it a thousand times before, but we'll repeat it once again.
"Collagen is the foundation of skin elasticity."
Indeed, the elasticity of skin, and therefore the development and elimination of wrinkles is directly related to how much collagen there is in the skin.
It is a well known fact that as we get older, the skin slows down its production of collagen, and hence - if we do nothing to stop the degradation or boost the production of collagen back to their previous levels, wrinkles will begin to appear.
But the key here is not whether or not collagen is essential, but instead - is collagen in a collagen cream form able to actually provide a solution to the problem?
Does Collagen Cream Actually Work?
Fundamentally, and in theory, collagen cream should work. If you are applying collagen topically to the skin, you should expect the dermal layer under the outer layer to absorb at least a small percentage of the collagen that you are newly introducing.
In reality however, the take-up rate of collagen in to the skin is very unpredictable. In some people, uptake rates are very high, whereas in others, they are very low or even completely non-existent.
Thankfully in hindsight, we are able to explain the answer. The absolute key here is what the collagen itself is mixed with before being introduced to the skin. If mixed with ingredients such as:
- Retinol
- Coenzyme Q10
- Kinetin
Then you can expect to see a great degree of results than if simply applying collagen by itself. Hence, collagen cream does work, assuming that it has the optimal combination of ingredients.
